Applause to all for a successful night on the air

by John Nolan

This is the easiest, and perhaps the most important "Stonewall Cleveland" column that I've had to write in a long time. I write to say "Thank you."

Last week Stonewall Cleveland and Buck Harris' radio show, The Gay 90's, co-sponsored a candidates night forum. It was the first time that the two formally collaborated, and the first time that a lesbian, gay, and bisexual candidates night was ever broadcast over the air-

arrived with the technical equipment and expertise and handled the broadcast aspects of the evening: thank you. Pilgrim Church, which had enthusiastically supported the event from the first contact, provided staff and volunteer assistance that made the whole evening flow more easily, and we need to thank all of those people for their help. Thanks, too, to Susan, who greeted people as they arrived and made sure that candidates and media representatives were treated well.

waves. How did it happen? Only through the dedicated hard work of a lot of people, which prompts this "thank you" column.

First of all, thanks to Buck, who made this happen. It was Buck who grabbed hold of the idea of broadcasting the candidates night, advertised the event on his show, and hosted the evening (in his inimitably charming style). Thanks again, Buck.

As the co-sponsor of the event, Stonewall Cleveland did much of the work of putting it together, and there are many people who worked very hard to see this project through. Scott, Sherry, Rich, Bob, Bill and their committee members came up with the idea, presented it to (what I must admit at times was a skeptical) Stonewall Cleveland, and then went to work. They drafted letters to candidates, press releases to the media and flyers to encourage attendance. Beyond the initial contact there were scores of phone calls (to candidates, Stonewall members and friends who might be interested). In this process Kathy and Karen were also a great help. Once the initial contacts and follow-up calls were made there was still the work of setting up the event. Buck and his crew

That brings up an important aspect of the evening: the candidates and their representatives. After all, what would a candidates night be without candidates? Thank you to all of those candidates who attended or sent representatives. Not only was it a chance for us to see and hear from them, it was also their chance to see us as an interested constituency that needs and deserves their attention.

It seems to me that all of the hard work of all of those I've mentioned (and those to whom I owe an apology for forgetting to mention) was worthwhile, because we had a huge crowd of people show up for candidates night. They were interested in hearing what the candidates had to say, learning which candidates chose to attend (or not attend), and having their individual questions answered. To all of those who attended we say thank you. It's important for the politicians (and would-be politicians) to see that we, as a community, are interested in politics and, more specifically, in what they had to say; it's also important for us to feel like our efforts were useful and appreciated.

Our final thanks goes to you guessed it-you, for reading this far.
